The LIFE CROLIS project was presented at the LULUCF workshop on December 18 and 19 in Kopenhagen, organized by the European Commission General Directorate for Climate Policy.
The workshop was intended for a wider circle of experts and administrators in charge of managing national emission registers, as well as experts and employees of various national agencies working on policy development in various sectors related to LULUCF. The workshop was organized hybridly with more than 70 participants in Copenhagen and almost the same number of people who participated online.
The 2023 amendment to the LULUCF Regulation introduced an EU target for carbon sinks in the LULUCF sector of -310 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent by 2030, to be implemented by binding national net removal targets. A key part of the revisions of the Regulation relates to improved management and monitoring using new technologies for land monitoring, and the reuse of geographically explicit datasets such as those from the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP).
Vladimir Jelavić from project partner EKONERG d.o.o. presented the LIFE CROLIS project, introducing the participants to the first results of the project and the challenges the project faces in its implementation.
In addition to the LIFE CROLIS project, 11 other activities and projects aimed at achieving the goals of the new EU legislation from the “Ready for 55%” package, especially the new LULUCF Regulation, were presented.
The workshop was divided into three thematic blocks: – synergies and opportunities for planning and implementing agricultural and forest management policies – facilitating policy formulation in the field of forestry and agriculture with improved geographically explicit data – increased monitoring of areas subject to protection and high biodiversity value
With each topic, the initial presentations were followed by discussions in several groups of participants in which experiences were exchanged and problems highlighted that people involved in this area of reporting deal with in their work.
The workshop was also useful for the exchange of opinions and experiences between different stakeholders of the conference and for expanding the cooperation network between different European projects in the LULUCF sector.
The conclusions and recommendations of the workshop together with the presentations and the new manual will be available on the website of the Directorate General for Climate Policy of the European Commission.
